Winter Wildlife Tracking in Kitchener and Waterloo

byron murray will be hosting a 3 part series of classes designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of wildlife tracking. Over the course of these sessions, participants will learn to identify, interpret, and understand animal tracks and signs in various habitats in the Kitchener Waterloo area.

The series will cover:

  1. Introduction to Wildlife Tracking
    Gain an overview of the history, importance, and applications of wildlife tracking in conservation, research, and recreation.

  2. Track and Sign Identification
    Learn to recognise various animal tracks, including size, shape, and distinguishing morphological features. We will also explore other signs of wildlife presence, such as scat, markings, and nests.

  3. Measuring Techniques
    Participants will learn and practice essential skills around how to measure tracks and track patterns, including track size, trail widths, stride lengths, along with tips for going beyond the measuring tape.

  4. Habitat and Behaviour
    Understand the relationship between wildlife behaviour and their habitats. We will discuss seasonal patterns, migration, and the significance of environmental factors in tracking.

The series is suitable for individuals of all skill levels, from beginners to those looking to refine their tracking abilities. Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook for observations and insights, tape measure, and a camera for documentation. We will be going off trail in some moderately hilly environments, following the trails of wild animals.

Cost is $150 - $200 sliding scale per participant. Participants must be 18+ at the time of the workshop or accompanied by an adult. Participants must sign up for all three classes as we will be building on previous lessons. Fees payable by e-transfer after registration is confirmed. Maximum 10 participants. Locations will be shared via email one week previous to each outing.
